A domain name is address of your website. When you register It, it gives you sole ownership and rights to the name of your site. Once registered, nobody can have the same domain. It is also known as URL (Universal Resource Locator).

It is used to make it easy for people to find web pages on the Internet. The Domain Name System converts domain names (such as yahoo.com or ask.com) into IP Addresses (numbers in the format of 11.222.33.44 or something similar) so that when someone wants to visit a particular web site they do not have to remember a long string of numbers but rather just type in an easy to remember name. They are are simply shortcuts to IP Addresses. In other words Domain is simply a name that is easy for people to remember. It is almost impossible for people to remember an IP Address to find a Web site. Many people specially newbie gets confused between domain and web host. You must remember for creating a website there are two main steps - registering a domain and choosing a web host. Both topics are completely different and very broad. Just because you have a domain does not mean that you can server a website to the world. To run a website, you will need a domain and a configured web serv er to put up a website.

Name of domains are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). The first-level set of domain names are the top-level domains (TLDs), including the generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as the prominent domains com, net and org, and the country code top-level domains (ccTLDs).

There are many Top level Domains - .com (For Commercial purposes), .net (For NET Providers), .org (For non-profit Organizations), .edu (for Educational institutions), .gov (For Government agencies), .mil (For Military Branches), .biz (For Business Purpose), .info (For Information purpose), .name (For Personal Information), .pro (For licensed Professionals), .aero (For Air Transport Purpose), .museum (For Museums), .coop (For Co-operative organizations).Top level domain are also formed based on country name. For Example - .us (for America), .ca (for Canada), .mx (for Mexico), .in (for India), .aus (for Australia). You must note that .com is still most widely recognized. It does not make which type of site you want to create, you may take .com domain.

There are three main parts of every domain - Host, SLD, TLD. For example in case of , the www part is called the Host, The dailyuseenglish part is called the Second Level Domain (SLD), the com part is called the Top Level Domain (TLD).The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) manages the top-level development and architecture of the Internet domain name space. It authorizes domain registrars, through which domains may be registered and reassigned.

You must also know the difference between Real And Free Domain. You can understand this by a simple example- is real name, while /manikjoshi is free name. You must avoid free name and get real domain name if you are serious to your internet business.

Different companies charge different price for domain, charges may vary from $10 to $40 per year. Some best places for buying them are 1and1.com, networksolutions.com, godaddy.com, sedo.com etc. I have very good personal experience with You must note that they are registered for at least one year. You will have to pay every year to keep your domain name active. However you can reserve your domain for up to 10 years in one go.

If you want to learn how to look up the owner of a domain then here is a quick way to find out who owns a domain name. Every domain name that is not privately registered will have the contact information for the owner of the domain name. If a domain name is privately registered then the domain name will have the contact information for the registrar of the domain. To do a quick domain name owner search simply enter in the URL at the "GoDaddy WhoIs Lookup Tool."

You may ask what actually private registration is. Private registration is done for protecting your privacy. As you're registering your name, you will be presented with the option of keeping your domain name private. A private domain registration will keep your information (name, email address, etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam from reaching your email box. Even though registering a "private" domain is not mandatory and will not block all spam, you must select this option. However you may have to pay additional price for this service, there are some domain registrars which provide this service free of cost. Company charging $40 per year definitely provide this service free of cost.

Finally, You can never fully own them. You rent them, by going through a process called Domain Registration. Some domain providers offer you more feature than others, giving you more control over your Domain Name.
